Enemy Encounters
As Research Associate on the AHRC-funded project ‘Strange Meetings: Enemy Encounters 1800-2020’ (@EnemyEncounters), Matilda worked with Prof Holly Furneaux (Cardiff University) to organise a three-day international conference in July 2021, in collaboration with Imperial War Museums.

The event explored views of enmity and allegiance in modern warfare. The conference focused on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries but also incorporated papers relating to the nineteenth century which looked forward to that era. Papers featured a broad, interdisciplinary range of approaches to experiences and representations of the enemy, with a particular focus on how the ‘other’ side is presented in museums, in first person writings, journalism, literature, art, performance, film and photography.
